Many x-ray tubes, used by crystallographers and others, operate with the aid of a tungsten filament in the region of 2500°K, The high operating temperature results in evaporation of the filament material with two serious consequences. The first is a finite but relatively short lifetime. The second is contamination of the target and windows with tungsten. In addition, if the tube is of the demountable type, connected to an oil-diffusion pump and a mechanical fore-pump, carbonaceous deposits can be a problem. In a typical tube, the filament is mounted within a centimeter or two of the target. The resulting radiant heating of the target presents additional cooling problems especially with low melting-point targets. Many if not all of the above objectional features are circumvented by a plasma controlled x-ray tube using a low pressure atmosphere of helium and a cage-like cathode fabricated from nickel wire-mesh. An experimental model has been operated for several hours at 15 kv and 10 ma on an aluminum target. Scaling up of the apparatus will permit power dissipations in the kilowatt range limited mainly by the available power source or vaporization of the target material.

Currently, making use of the phenomenon of total external reflection of x-rays by matter, lenses are being designed and constructed for use in x-ray telescopes, x-ray microscopes and small angle x-ray scattering cameras. One of the lenses under consideration for a biomedical application is a right-circular cylinder of nominal wall thickness coated with gold. Since the particular biomedical application is not demanding with respect to resolution and image quality in comparison with an x-ray telescope or an x-ray microscope, the imaging properties of the simple right-circular cylinder are satisfactory and the device economical to produce. A detailed study of its properties was undertaken. One of the most stringent requirements on the internal grinding and polishing of such a lens is the roundness of the cylinder. An interferometric method using a laser source enabled the diameter to be determined to one part in 106. Several tests of optical quality vere performed at 6328A in the visible and 8.34A in the X-ray region. A centered stop prevented the direct beam from reaching the screen. A point source of highly coherent 6328A radiation was located on the axis of the cylinder. The divergent beam of light striking the inside walls of the cylinder gives rise to a non-localized Airy-type diffraction pattern. If the surface finish is rough the diffraction pattern will show a star-like pattern at its center. Lack of roundness is indicated by poorly shaped diffraction fringes of low quality. Other optical tests at 6328A in the near and far field regions as well as in the “focal' plane also yield information concerning the roundness and smoothness of the optical element. The previous optical tests when repeated with 8.34A x-rays should give essentially the same general diffraction and interference effects noted with the 6328A radiation. However, most effects are not observable because of the poor resolution of x-ray film, Image forming tests clearly show the presence of barrel and pincushion type distortion.

That X-rays focused by reflection from concave surfaces exhibit anomalous image broadening was shown by Ehrenberg using a line source. Even flat nonfocusing surfaces of many different materials produced an anomalous striated reflection. According to Ehrenbevg, the common cause for the observed broadening in the focused image and the striated pattern in the nonfocused reflection is a periodic surface structure. In later years, Eliot, using a point source of X-rays reflected from a concave surface, observed a striated pattern at a position well beyond the focal plane. It is to be noted that Eliot's experiment combined elements of Ehrenberg's two experiments—a focusing surface and observations made far from any focal plane, real or virtual. Eliot observed his striations with fused silica surfaces but not with obsidian. Recently, Yoneda, using X-rays collimated by a Soller slit and incident on a plane surface, observed an anomalous line reflection not previously reported.
Various experiments performed by the present authors have attempted to duplicate some of the above situations as closely as possible, either directly with X-rays or in an analogous manner with visibic light. It will be shown that satisfactory explanations can be formulated from previously unsuspected diffraction phenomena, recently confirmed by experiment as well as by a simple experimental oversight. In spite of the dilemma presented, either horn eliminates all previous limitations due to surface conditions, so that the tolerable surface roughness is once again determined by the well-known Rayleigh criterion rather than by any periodic surface irregularities introduced through the polishing process or by nature.

The reflection X-ray microscope is a microscope in the conventional sense. X-rays are actually focused in the formation of magnified images of minute objects. Its principal component is a pair of concave glass mirrors whichhave been polished and figured with great care. In common with other optical devices, the reflection X-ray microscope suffers from various aberrations which limit its resolution. Until recently its narrow field and lack of contrast have made it impractical for the examination of histological or metallurgical specimens.
The X-ray microscope has the theoretical advantage of resolution when compared with the optical microscope. While it cannot compete with the ultimate resolution of the electron microscope, it has the advantage of being able to reveal the internal details of objects which are opaque to the electron microscope- Although there is no doubt that the X-ray microscope can contribute to our knowledge of structural details, perhaps its greatest potential lies in its analytical-chemistry aspects. Already a technique exists at unit magnification (contact microradiography) for weighing histological specimens whose cellular structures range from 10−12 to 10−14 g. The enlarged image provided by X-ray microscopy should greatly aid in a more extensive application of the technique.
The above advantages and possible areas of application are a source of continuous stimulation in the development of a reflection X-ray microscope which will operate close to its theoretical limit of resolution.
